The DJI Phantom 3 is the most popular quadcopter and the flagship for DJI. However they released 4 versions for this series. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard, DJI Phantom 3 4K, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and the DJI Phantom 3 Professional.

One of the most common question that are frequently asked about the DJI Phantom are What the heck are the difference between the series? and Which DJI Phantom should I buy?

Here are some of the features of each quadcopter broken down to a very simple and concise format. We will compare the DJI Phantom series so that you can learn the differences between the series.

So there are essentially 4 “versions”. Each are different but also relatively the same:

  1. DJI phantom 3 Standard
  2. DJI Phantom 3 4K
  3. DJI Phantom 3 Advanced
  4. DJI Phantom 3 Professional
  5. Conclusion

1. What is the DJI Phantom 3 Standard?

DJI Phantom 3 Standard

  1. The starter/entry model among the series.
  2. Lowest cost model at $799 $499.
  3. It comes with the Quadcopter, Remote Controller and Camera.
  4. The Remote Controller is based on the older DJI Phantom 2 version. You do not have controls dedicated to changing exposure, video recording, playback and you cannot customised the buttons.
  5. The camera records in 2.7K video and 12 Megapixel stills. It uses the Panasonic Smart FSI Lense.
  6. The FPV feed is displayed in 720p. Works in conjunction with the DJI Go app that is available for Android and iOS.
  7. You must pair a Smartphone or Tablet with the App in order to get the FPV feed. However you probably won’t be able to mount a Tablet as the Remote Controller mount that comes with the DJI Phantom 3 is too small.
  8. It comes with GPS Positioning Module but NO Optical Flow Vision Positioning System. It’s a sensor that is designed to help you fly by doing real time complex calculation to keep your quadcopter stable especially during landing and holding patterns. Indoor hovering assistance is not available with this model.
  9. It has a maximum transmission unobstructed distance of 1 KM.

Should You Buy It?

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is created for the beginners or first time pilots. It is relatively cheap compared to the rest of the series. The Standard version does not have a lot of features compared to the rest. However for the price point of $499 it makes it very affordable for people who just want to start out. It is a great beginner aerial photography ready to fly quadcopter system.

2. What is the DJI Phantom 3 4K?

DJI Phantom 3 4K

  1. The “One Up” above the starter/entry level model.
  2. Priced at $999 $799.
  3. It comes with the Quadcopter, Remote Controller and 4K Camera.
  4. The Remote Controller is the latest and more “advanced” version. It has a Video Recording button, Shutter Control button, Playback button and 2 Dedicated Customisable button.
  5. The camera records in 4K resolution and 12.4 Megapixel Stills. It uses the more popular Sony Exmor R BSI Lense.
  6. The FPV feed is displayed in 480p. Works in conjunction with the DJI Go app that is available for Android and iOS.
  7. You must pair a Smartphone or Tablet with the App in order to get the FPV feed. With the new controller mount, you will be able to mount an iPad mini as the FPV display.
  8. It comes with GPS Positioning Module and also the Vision Positioning System with ultrasonic sensors (Capable of positioning without GPS). It supports Indoor hovering [Flight height lower than 3 meters, surface with clear pattern and adequate lighting (Lux > 15)]
  9. It has a maximum transmission unobstructed distance of 1.2 KM.

Should You Buy It?

The DJI Phantom 3 4K is created for the Aerial videographers that needs UHD 4K Video Recording capabilities. It is a slightly better model compared to the DJI Phantom 3 Standard. If you are an aerial videographer that needs an easy to use quadcopter to shoot 4K video then this is the quadcopter for you. For the price point of $799, it is easily one of the most affordable 4K Aerial Video Quadcopter out in the market. However in my opinion, there is a better quadcopter in this series based on features vs cost.

3. What is the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced?

DJI Phantom 3 Advanced

  1. The better version without 4K aerial video recording.
  5. The camera records in 2.7K resolution and 12.4 Megapixel Stills. It uses the more popular Sony Exmor R BSI Lense.
  6. The FPV feed is displayed in 720p. Works in conjunction with the DJI Go app that is available for Android and iOS.
  7. You must pair a Smartphone or Tablet with the App in order to get the FPV feed. With the new controller mount, you will be able to mount an iPad mini as the FPV display.
  8. It comes with an updated GPS+GLONASS Dual Positioning Module (Provides accurate positioning when GPS satellite signal is weak) and also the Vision Positioning System with ultrasonic sensors (Capable of positioning without GPS). It supports Indoor hovering [Flight height lower than 3 meters, surface with clear pattern and adequate lighting (Lux > 15)]
  9. It has a maximum transmission unobstructed distance of 5 KM. It uses DJI’s Lightbridge technology that provides better video and control signal.

Should You Buy It?

If you are willing to pay $799 for the DJI Phantom 3 4K, in my opinion for the same price you should get the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced. Yes the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced does not shoot in 4K however 4K screens are not the norm at this stage. For the same price, you get the benefit of a more reliable GPS system that utilises American and Russian satellite to help the quadcopter pinpoints its location. You can also fly the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced further at maximum unobstructed range of 5 KM due to Lightbridge technology.

4. What is the DJI Phantom 3 Professional?

DJI Phantom 3 Professional

  1. The Advanced version with 4K aerial video recording and slightly bigger battery charger.
  2. Priced at $1259 $999.

If you want a quadcopter with better GPS positioning and further transmission distance and 4K aerial video recording then at $999, the DJI Phantom 3 Professional is the best quadcopter that you can buy. The only other difference between the Advanced and Professional apart from the 4K recording is that the Professional comes with a 100 W charger that is capable of charging your batteries within 63 minutes compared to 96 minutes.

5. Conclusion

Now the DJI Phantom 3 series is designed for all types of pilots ranging from Beginner, “Intermediate” and Professional with 4K.

PhantomPriceCameraFPV FeedGPSMaximum Distance
Phantom 3 Standard$4992.7K / 12 MP720PGPS1 KM
Phantom 3 4K$7994K / 12.4 MP480PGPS1.2 KM
Phantom 3 Advanced$7992.7K / 12 MP720PGPS+GLONASS5 KM
Phantom 3 Professional$9994K / 12.4 MP720PGPS+GLONASS5 KM

In my opinion, it really depends on your budget and requirements. If you are just a casual flyer and just want to enjoy recording aerial videos of your flight then the Standard version is for you. But if you want a better quadcopter (worth the money) I recommend that you consider the Advanced version due to the Price, Better GPS module and longer range.
